Dangers of automatic translation

This month, during the 26th General Conference on Weights and Measures of Paris, the head of the Temperature Area of the Spanish Metrology Centre has been embarrassed by the English translation of a press release on Twitter, that wrongfully translated her name to “it is pain of field”. This is one of the mistakes that should never happen, the translation of someone’s name, as it is common knowledge in the translation industry. The error was probably due to automatic translation, that does not understand that “Dolores del Campo” is actually the person’s name. A reviewer would have saved the situation here.

That is one of the many risks of using automatic translation and a reminder that there should always be a reviewer making sure the translation was made correctly before it is published.
